Saturday 13th October

Tour 1:   Walking tour of downtown Chicago's historic skyscrapers, led by a docent from the Chicago Architecture Foundation

Out of the charred landscape that resulted from the Great fire of 1871 arose the prototype of the modern commercial metropolis.  Discover the historic beginnings of the Chicago School of Architecture and the early skyscrapers built between 1870 and 1935.  Buildings featured include the Art Deco Chicargo Board of Trade building; the Auditorium Building, a Louis Sullivan masterpiece; and the Rookery, a National Historic Landmark.

The tour begins at 224 South Michigan Avenue.  Duration: 2.30 - 4.30 p.m.  Cost $13 (plus $3 charge for recommended round-trip public transportation to the starting point of the tour)

Tour 2:   Architecture River Cruise, led by a docent from the Chicago Architecture Foundation

This tour operated by the Foundation allows you to view fifty of Chicago's most famous buildings and bridges from the unique perspective of the Chicago River.  The point of departure is a pleasant 15 minute walk down Michigan Avenue from the Newberry.

Duration: 3 - 4.30 p.m.   Cost $22

Tour 3:   Architectural highlights of Chicago by bus, led by a docent from the Chicago Architecture Foundation

Participants wishing to explore the diversity of Chicago's architecture in the comfort of a motor coach may want to chose this wider ranging sampler.  The bus tour covers 30 miles of Chicago architecture, including the Loop, Hyde Park, several historic districts, university campuses, and the interior of Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie House.

Duration: 2 - 5.30 p.m.   Cost $36

Sunday 14th October

Tour 4:   Cartography and Botany on Chicago's North Shore          THIS TOUR IS NOW FULL

Spend an afternoon among the cartographic and cultural treasures of Chicago's northern lakefront suburbs.  Highlights of this tour include the Chicago Botanical Gardens, the Bahai Temple, the map library of Northwestern University, and guided tour of one of the area's finest private map collections.

Duration: 9.30 a.m. - 3 p.m.   Cost $36 (lunch at the Chicago Botanical Gardens not included)

Tour 5:   The Illinois and Michigan Canal

Historian of cartography David Buisseret will lead a lively historical tour of sites along the canal that gave birth to the modern city of Chicago.  When it was completed in 1849 the Illinois and Michigan Canal made possible a direct water route between the Great Lakes and the Upper Mississipi River Valley.  The canal opend the rich grain producing regions west of Chicago to Eastern markets and secured Chicago's position as metropolis of the mid-continent.

The tour includes lunch at the historic Gaylord Building in Lockport.  Please specify a choice of entree from:
a)  blackened boneless breast of chicket, thinly sliced ham and fresh mushroomas on a bed of seasonal greens
b)  broiled seasonal fish with julienne vegetables and seasoned rice in a white wine shallot sauce
c)  sliced prime rib au jus with mashed potatoes and fresh vegetables

Duration: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.   Cost $45   Registrations cannot be accepted for this tour after 1st October 2001.

Tuesday 16th October

Tour 6:   Tales and Traditions of Western Wisconsin

A scenic drive to Taliesin in Spring Gree, home and school of Frank Lloyd Wright, Wisconsin's innovative architect of the 19th and 20th centuries, with side visits to Menona Terrace, Wright's dream made real, and the History of Cartography Project at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

Duration: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.  The tour price includes two nights' accommodation in Milwaukee's historic Astor Hotel (October 15-16) and lunch at Taliesin.  Cost is $199 per person for single occupancy room and $145 per person for double occupancy room.

Please note that tour participants are responsible for their own return transportation to Chicago.  Information about transportation options is available from the conference secretariat.
