| IMCoS seeks to encourage young enthusiasts, who although
relatively new to the fascinating subject of maps, have
already taken their first steps into a chosen cartographic area of interest.
Two young cartographers researching at The British Library and Oxford University
have been sponsored by IMCoS members Ishtak and Eliane Sperling to talk
about their chosen field. |

Lecture
|
15.10 |
| "Motifs and Mystery: classical
influences on the 16th century image of Northern Europe" |
|
| With particular emphasis on the maps of Olaus Magnus, Margaret
Small will discuss how Northern Europe remained outside the knowledge of
Southern Europeans, many of whom believed that the "frigid zone" was so
inhospitable that it destroyed all human life. Olaus Magnus challenged
these assumptions and provided historical information on Scandinavia to
the rest of Europe. Margaret's masters degree was obtained from the
University of Victoria in Canada and she is currently a D.Phil student
at St. Edmunds Hall, Oxford. |
